Unit number: COU 440
Unit title: M. Scott Peck: The Road Less Travelled (US spelling: The Road Less Traveled)
Credit value: 3 credits
Description: Based on the well-known work by psychotherapist Dr. M. Scott Peck, this unit examines ways of coming to grips with problems and solving them, based around a spiritual framework of Discipline, Love, Growth and Religion, and Grace. Most people try to avoid the confrontation of problems but perhaps that is unhelpful and impedes growth. The many subjects covered include delaying gratification, recognising compatibility, analysing personal relationships, dependency, parenting, the nature of religion, the meaning of suffering, romantic love, openness to challenges, ego boundaries, balancing and self-discipline. Therapy case studies are given to illustrate the principles offered. The assignments give opportunities to agree or disagree with what some might think of as controversial statements in the key text. Students are invited to clarify their own thoughts and ideas and give reasons for their opinions, and to form an opinion of the relevance of Dr. Scott Peck’s work for today.
Key textbook: M. Scott Peck, The Road Less Travelled: A New Psychology of Love, Traditional Values and Spiritual Growth, Rider, London, 1978. [Various other editions of this book are available and the student may use any edition.]
