Unit number:     COU 436

Unit title:    Biologically Informed Therapy for Depression

Credit value:      3 credits

Description
:
Depression has been treated psychotherapeutically using a variety of methods, but in recent years a new synthesis has been taking into account recent findings about how depression works biologically and neurologically. In this approach, the regressive mental processes of depression are viewed as effects and not causes. This new psychotherapeutic theory leads to a re-examination of the worth of traditional psychotherapeutic treatments. Another key element of the biologically-informed approach is that depression has its own unique character regardless of what has led to it. This unit explores neurological, behavioural, genetic and psychopharmacological aspects of depression; a comparative discussion of psychodynamic and biological approaches; symptoms of depressive illnesses; the many ways in which depression undermines normal functioning. New approaches to treatment are introduced and compared to traditional techniques. A series of case histories is presented and information given on how the new knowledge of depression might be relevant to other psychological disorders.

Comments:

This unit does NOT constitute a training in therapy for depression. This unit is offered for educational purposes only and not as part of a professional training to qualify as a psychotherapist or counsellor. This unit may form part of the general education of therapists from other backgrounds. Lay therapists (therapists without medical training) should not diagnose depression and should ideally see depressed clients under the guidance or support of a doctor. If you are a counsellor or therapist, you should be aware of  any regulations or laws in your own country and within your profession regarding the diagnosis or treatment of depression.

Amendments may be made to the details and provision of units at any time.
