Unit number: COU 434
Unit title: Counselling and Psychotherapy in Private Practice
Credit value:
3 credits
Description:
This unit guides you in a number of issues concerning the management of your
business as a private counsellor or therapist. The topics covered are: the
business of private practice; trading style, accounts and taxes; assessments,
contracts and records; premises; safety, boundaries and insurance; promotion of
your practice; and defining success.
Key textbook: Thistle, Roger. Counselling and Psychotherapy in Private Practice. SAGE Publications, 1998
Comments:
The textbook is British and is aimed at people intending to set up practice in the UK. Students outside the UK will find that some issues are universal and some are quite different. Wherever you are, you will have to pay for accommodation and taxes, and you will need to advertise your practice in some way, even if it is not called advertising. Wherever you are, you may wish to choose a name for your practice, and you will have to get such things as business cards and leaflets. However, the bureaucracy and laws surrounding a counselling and therapy practice will differ considerably from one country (and even state) to another. If you are outside the UK, you will still be able to use the book as a useful text and to answer the set questions. You will also get a glimpse of what the professional scene is like in the UK, and it can be quite informative to see things from the perspective of professionals outside your own country. Some notes for students outside the UK are provided.
