Unit number:     COU 427

Unit title:    Advanced Cognitive Behaviour Therapy  (US spelling: Advanced Cognitive Behavior Therapy)

Credit value:      5 credits

Description
:
Cognitive Behaviour Therapy is a popular institutional choice of therapy because of the large number of studies showing that it is effective. Drawing on cognitive and behavioural approaches, CBT focuses on change in the here and now and on helping the client to develop skills to control problem thinking and to change specific behaviour patterns. This course is aimed at students with experience of therapy in institutional settings or in private practice with psychological disorders. An overview of CBT is included in the set text for those more familiar with other approaches, and specific material is provided concerning the assessment procedure, anxiety states, phobias, obsessional disorders, depression, somatic problems, eating disorders, chronic psychiatric conditions, marital problems, sexual dysfunctions and general problem-solving strategies.

Key textbook:   Hawton, Keith, et al., (eds.) Cognitive Behaviour Therapy for Psychiatric Problems: A Practical Guide. Oxford: Oxford University Press, 1998 (first published 1989)

Comments:

This unit does NOT constitute a training in Cognitive Behaviour Therapy or Advanced Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and students who pass this unit are not thereby entitled to call themselves Cognitive Behaviour Therapists. This unit is offered for general educational purposes only. This unit may form part of the general education of therapists from other backgrounds and will also help them to decide whether referral to a CBT therapist should be considered, or to liaise with CBT therapists where necessary. The student should not use techniques in this course to treat a serious problem he or she has not treated before, without suitable practical training. CIU does not provide practical training in CBT.

Amendments may be made to the details and provision of units at any time.
