Unit number: COU 426
Unit title: Interpreting Patients' Drawings
Credit value: 3 credits
Description: Spontaneous drawings by counselling and psychotherapy clients and by patients with physical and mental illnesses can reveal unconscious content and be a useful aid to psychotherapeutic insight and processes. Using a Jungian framework, this unit systematically explores how to interpret drawings by analysing the content, colour, use of space, line, proportion and other elements of the picture. An introduction to art therapy, a discussion of theory and guidelines for the therapeutic use of drawings are also given. The textbook is profusely illustrated in colour with drawings by children and adults.
Key textbook:
Furth, Gregg M. The Secret World of Drawings: A Jungian Approach to Healing
through Art. Toronto, Canada, Inner City Books, 2002.
Previously published by Sigo Press, Boston 1988. The text, layout and
illustrations of the Sigo and Inner City editions are identical. However, the
Sigo edition (which you might find second-hand) is slightly larger and therefore
easier to read. Apart from that, the Inner City Books has an index: the Sigo
edition does not have one and it is a welcome addition. Scholars will prefer
the indexed version; art therapists and lovers of art will prefer the Sigo one
if they can get it.
