Unit number: COU
323
Unit title: Helping
Anorexia and Bulimia
Credit value: 3 credits
Description: This unit provides an overview of previous physiological and psychological theories of eating disorders and introduces a new theory which unites these two aspects. This updated approach, firmly based in over 15 years’ research by the textbook’s authors, leads to criticism of some previous practices and to many detailed pointers to good practice for the helping professional who has eating-disordered clients. This unit will be of interest to: doctors, nurses, counsellors, psychotherapists, social workers, and to students of counselling, psychotherapy, hypnotherapy, psychology and social studies. It will also be of interest to friends and families of eating disorder sufferers and non-professional helpers. Sufferers themselves will also find it valuable in understanding their condition.
Key textbook: Duker, Marilyn and Slade, Roger. Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia: How to Help. Second edition. Buckingham and Philadelphia, Open University Press, 2003.
