Unit number: COU
319
Unit title: Counselling
difficult clients
Credit value: 3 credits
Description: The counselling relationship requires trust and the will or ability to accept the help that is given. It is difficult for certain clients to conform to these requirements. Such clients can be disturbing and the counsellor attempting to cope with them can be placed under extreme stress. This unit provides some practical advice for interactions with such problem clients, and also a framework of understanding which does not attribute the difficulties to the client, nor to any lack of skill of the therapist, but instead examines the nature of the whole situation. As well as examples given in the set text, this unit contains three unique case studies which will challenge the student. This unit can be useful in the training of supervisors and supervisees.
