Unit number: COU
317
Unit title: Qualitative
Research Methods
Credit value: 3 credits
Description: This unit introduces the student to the theory and practice of qualitative research in the fields of counselling and psychotherapy; the unit also has relevance for those doing research in other fields such as nursing and social work. Qualitative research, in the words of the main text's author, "requires an immersion in some aspect of social life, in an attempt to capture the wholeness of that experience, followed by an attempt to convey this understanding to others." This unit follows each stage of the research process, thoroughly describing the stages of data-gathering, paper writing and the discussion and critique of findings.
