Unit number: COU
311
Unit title: A
Guide to Person-Centred Counselling (US spelling: person-centered
counseling)
Credit value: 3 credits
Description: The person-centred approach to counselling was developed in the 1940s and 1950s in departure from traditional psychoanalysis. This unit presents a more modern explanation of the theory of person-centred counselling with relevance to actual practice, concentrating on a specific case study. The core conditions (empathy, acceptance and congruence) are explored and the student, when following the developing relationship, will gain the perspective of both client and counsellor.
Key textbook: Mearns, David and Thorne, Brian: Person-Centred Counselling in Action, Sage, 1988 (First edition)
[NB the third edition will be available from May 2007 and, in due course, this unit will be updated directly from the first edition to the third edition. T]
