Unit number: COU
258
Unit title: Games
People Play
Credit value: 3 credits
Description: This unit is a study of the classic text of Transactional Analysis, “Games People Play” by Eric Berne, M.D., first published in 1964 and still in print. Transactional Analysis is a branch of psychotherapy, a theory of personality, and a branch of social psychology that recognizes that much of our social behaviour follows patterns, called “games” that are playing out family, ancestral and social group dynamics. These “games” may be played at a harmless or socially acceptable level, or at more serious levels ending in pathological, risky or dangerous variations. Games arise from the out-of-awareness interaction between the “ego states” of one person and another. Dr Berne called the three main ego states “Adult”, “Parent” and “Child”. The alternative to being involved in “games” is to be in a state of awareness, to behave spontaneously, and to have true intimacy in relationships. However, that is a state that is hard to reach for most people.
Key textbook: Berne, Eric. Games People Play. Penguin Books, 2004 (first published 1964). The student may obtain any edition.
