Unit number: COU
255
Unit title: Introduction
to Cognitive-Analytic Therapy
Credit value: 4.5 credits
Description:
Cognitive-Analytic Therapy is a model of time-limited, focused therapy that was pioneered within the British National Health Service at Guy’s and St Thomas’s Hospitals, London, by Dr Anthony Ryle and members of the Association of Cognitive Analytic Therapists. It was popularised as a self-help method in the book “Change for the Better: Self-Help Through Practical Psychotherapy” by Elizabeth Wilde McCormick. That book in turn proved to be so clear and comprehensive that it has become a recommended text used on various counselling and psychotherapy training courses. The techniques and approaches of CAT are drawn from psychoanalysis, Kelly’s personal construct theory, cognitive-behavioural approaches, developmental and cognitive psychology and artificial intelligence, resulting in a set of powerful methods for personal change through understanding and self-observation.
(Note: This unit has not been approved by the ACAT and CIU has no connection with that organisation. This unit does NOT constitute a training in Cognitive-Analytic Therapy and students who pass this unit are not thereby entitled to call themselves Cognitive-Analytic Therapists. This unit is offered for educational purposes and/or as part of an academic degree or diploma course and not as part of a professional training to qualify as a psychotherapist or counsellor.)
Key textbook: McCormick, Elizabeth Wilde. Change for the Better: Self-Help Through Practical Psychotherapy. New York & London: Continuum, 2002. (NB This reprint contains the same text as the 1996 Second Edition published by Cassell, so either version will suffice.)
