SEPTEMBER 2009 NEWSLETTER (ONLINE VERSION)New fees – 6 months’ free study! – Facebook – Independent Studies New Fees from October 2009 In our last two newsletters we announced that we could not hold our specially-reduced “recession” fees much longer. Students who have taken advantage of those fees have been able to join their courses at the lowest fees in CIU’s 9-year history of independent distance education. The new basic fee for most programmes when paid in full at enrolment has increased from GBP 995 to GBP 1,250. To put this in perspective, this is still much cheaper than our pre-recession fee of GBP 1,495 and vastly cheaper than the fees we charged some years ago when the typical degree cost around GBP 3,000. A further review of fees is scheduled for December, after which the basic advance fee will probably revert to GBP 1,495 from January 2010. You can still enrol for most courses at the low “recession” fee but we must receive your enrolment and payment by midnight (UK time) on 30 September – so act now! (If you intend to start in January or later, our new 24-month registration provision, described in the next article, will enable you to enrol now and save, with no loss of study time) Our new table of tuition fees is published at www.unicalamus.org/tuition.htm Six Months’ Free Study on Many Courses – worth GBP 250 The standard registration period for most CIU degree programmes is 18 months. Instead of arbitrary longer registration periods, our approach is that after the first 18 months, students should pay only for the time they need, and this reduces fees for the students who can do their courses or research quickly. In these hectic times, students with full-time jobs are telling us they are working harder than ever, and need more time for study. Therefore, for an experimental period until the end of December 2009, we are offering registration of up to 24 months on most single degree courses for the standard fees. This saves you GBP 250 and will allow you to plan a more relaxed schedule for your studies. This offer will have some limitations: it will not apply to dual degree registrations, for which the standard registration period of 36 months will stand. It also will not apply to the following; contemporary voice, music, South African studies, M.Phil. or Ph.D. research, or higher doctorates. It will not apply to any enrolment where a specially negotiated fee has been agreed due to extenuating circumstances or hardship, or to students on any instalment or modular payment plan. Possible areas of study that can come within this plan include: Communication, Business, History, Area Studies, Politics, Literature, Arts, Social Studies, Social History, Philosophy, International Relations The online brochure for this degree is at: http://www.unicalamus.org/brochure_independent_interdisciplinary_ma_degrees.htm New UKCHT distance diplomas Our affiliated school, UK College of Holistic Training, has two new short certificates and diplomas by distance learning which are based on CIU courses: Diploma in Psychoanalytic Social Studies – click here for details Diploma in Psychiatric Disorders Awareness – click here for details (CIU students/alumni who have already studied the relevant material can apply for Diploma certification) To see the full range of UKCHT courses visit the UKCHT website More UKCHT short courses are being developed - subscribe to the UKCHT newsletter here Forthcoming changes We are making revisions to the CIU Catalogue (prospectus) to incorporate the new tuition fee tables and some minor updates and amendments.
