distance learning courses
Season's
Greetings
to All Our Subscribers
We wish you Happy Holidays and every good fortune for
2010.
As the holidays approach, we have four important
announcements: two fee-saving offers from Calamus and
UKCHT, and two announcements about regulatory matters
for those practising complementary therapies in the UK.
Fees
increases: 16 days left to enrol & save – a degree from
GBP 500!
Special Fee Offers Until 18 December Only
When the recession started to bite, we
slashed our tuition fees by about one-third to help
people enrol. However, it became impossible to
continue those cuts and so we made an interim increase.
The tuition fee for most single degree programmes is at
present GBP 1,250, and will increase to GBP 1,495 in
January, reverting to pre-recession pricing.
However, we are restructuring the fees
for the second award if people enrol for a dual degree
programme (for example BA/MA or MA/Doctorate) and pay
for the full programme up front.
Until 18 December, if you enrol for a
dual degree in an eligible field,
the second
degree will cost only GBP 500! (Total GBP
1,750).
After the holidays, the second degree
will be GBP 750 (and the first will be GBP 1,495).
So
you will save an incredible GBP 495 by enrolling for
your dual degree programme now! We will need to have
all your enrolment documents and your payment by 18
December so contact us now if you are interested!
If you intended to enrol some time next
year, you can save by registering and paying now. We
will keep your place and activate your enrolment at a
set date later on.
The “small print” – this offer is subject to acceptance
and approval in each individual case and may be
withdrawn at any time. The offer is not applicable to
Music, Business Management, South African Studies and
any other field or programme needing customised tuition,
extra facilities or intensive supervision. This offer
cannot be applied where payment has already been sent in
full or in part or where fees have already been invoiced
by PayPal or Google Checkout. Apart from the 7-day
“cooling off” period allowed by law for UK/EU residents,
tuition fee payments made are non-refundable.
Additional fees may be charged if a transfer to a
different major is requested.
Our standard table of tuition fees is
published at
www.unicalamus.org/tuition.htm
Another great fee-saving offer from UKCHT
If you are interested in a shorter
certificate or diploma course, UK College of Holistic
Training is making a half-price offer on your second
course if you buy two courses and pay for them by 18
December. For courses available, see

Counselling freedom in the UK
UK counsellors and psychotherapists have
been concerned for some time about the prospect of
statutory (government) regulation of the talking
therapies. Many accredited members of the most
prestigious professional societies viewed government
regulation as interference with professional freedoms.
Members of other therapy societies, many of which accept
distance learning training routes for part or all of the
required training, wondered whether their members might
find themselves unable to practise. The uncertainty also
made it difficult for would-be students of distance
leaning colleges to decide whether to enrol, even though
distance learning was the only practical way they could
hope to qualify due to work, time and financial
commitments.
Now the situation has changed and, in the
face of an overwhelming professional outcry against
statutory control, plans for regulation have been
shelved and it is likely they will be abandoned by the
next government as unworkable. The UK is set to continue
its valued traditional freedom of practice for the
talking therapies, allowing independent and
self-employed practitioners from many training routes to
continue working at their chosen vocation.
The Health Professions Council, who were
working towards statutory regulation, revealed recently
that they were bombarded with over 1000 responses from
within the professions, many critical of their plans.
The British Association for Counselling and
Psychotherapy has torn the proposals apart, and reported
that many BACP members have joined the anti-regulation
pressure group, the Alliance for Counselling and
Psychotherapy
www.allianceforcandp.org .
The Shadow Health Minister, Ann Milton
MP, held a meeting of professional stakeholders at which
the extent of disapproval of regulation was plain. After
this, on 9th November, the HPC announced that
regulation will be significantly delayed, and there is
speculation that if the Conservatives form the next
government, statutory regulation plans will be softened
if they are pursued at all. Another blow to government
plans was the recent election of regulation opponent
Professor Andrew Samuels as Chair of the United Kingdom
Council for Psychotherapy (the other “big” professional
body alongside the BACP).
We acknowledge the newsletter of the
Counselling Society (10/11/09)

latest facts on the anti-regulation campaign reported
here, though any errors and interpretations here are

A benefit of counselling-related degrees
from Calamus International University is that parallel
Diploma certification can be arranged from UK College of
Holistic Training and/or Calamus Extension College Ltd.
for a nominal extra cost. Graduates can therefore
obtain a UK Diploma in Counselling as well as their
overseas degree, enabling them to apply to certain UK
professional bodies. Also, Calamus Extension College
Ltd. can issue a CPD document based upon the degree
transcript, which will be proof of UK-based CPD study
for those who require it.
UK government speaks on food supplements
Over recent months alarm was raised by
various retailers, associations and therapists concerned
that adaptation of the WHO/UN Codex Alimentarius
proposals would restrict the availability of food
supplements in the UK, and that such supplements might
only be available on prescription. An on-line petition
was sent to the Prime Minister requesting that he oppose
the Codex.
On 27 November the Prime Minister replied
that the Codex proposals do not require the UK to change
its current distribution of food supplements. He
further stated that Codex requirements are not
enforceable in law and that in the UK, food supplements
were regulated by European law instead.
It does seem that either the UK food
supplement lobby was misinformed or that some of the
scaremongering was a marketing ploy. Now that the
situation has been clarified at the highest level, UK
consumers can enjoy their supplements without the
perceived threat of being deprived of their favourite
vitamins and minerals.
Further information on the petition and
the Government’s response is available at:
http://www.number10.gov.uk/Page21468
The
Codex still represents a genuine threat to consumer
choice in certain other countries, and some of that
anxiety might have fuelled UK debate.

Not
yet ready to take a CIU degree course? Since most UKCHT
courses have their roots in CIU course units (used by
UKCHT under licence), taking a UKCHT certificate or
diploma is an ideal way to "taste" how CIU study works,
and earn credit transferable to CIU at the same time!
Forthcoming Changes
We are
making revisions to the CIU Catalogue (prospectus) to
incorporate the new tuition fee tables and some minor
updates and amendments. We are also working on the new
version of the Course Unit List which is taking longer
than expected because we are introducing various new
courses. When these new versions are live they will be
announced in future newsletters.
