Degree and Diploma Courses of Calamus International University

Flexibility is the hallmark of Calamus International University distance degrees. Each taught degree programme will have a number of essential units set for the student by the academic advisor, taking into account prior credit and the student’s background. Remaining units may be taken from a wide variety of related options. A small number of units (the number depending on available credit) may be taken, subject to approval, from most fields in the  course catalogue, enabling overlapping, unrelated or fringe topics to be studied. Each taught degree student may request some units to be created on a topic (or using a textbook) which is not currently in the catalogue: if approved and created, that unit is then available for other students. Also, a student may request some units to be studied by independent reading (such as academic journals in local university libraries) and assessed by extended essay. The Course Unit List will have details of most units currently on offer. You are welcome to enquire about your special preferences as more units are always under development.

All degree courses listed in this prospectus are by distance learning. Advanced/Postgraduate Diplomas are also available in most subjects, subject to arrangement.  It is possible for some Diplomas to be awarded in the UK by Calamus Extension College Ltd. However, all degrees are non-UK degrees awarded by Calamus International University.

Certificates and Diplomas (also Advanced Diplomas, Graduate/Postgraduate Diplomas)

A diploma qualification, in the English-speaking world, usually refers to a qualification that is not a degree, because it is either below full degree standard or shorter than a degree. Diplomas awarded to persons who already have a degree are often called, “advanced”, “graduate” or “postgraduate” diplomas. The designatory letters used by diploma holders normally begin with “Dip.” or sometimes just begin with the letter D in the UK. However in the USA, D at the start of a qualification normally stands for “Doctor” so Dip. is the preferable style.

Most Calamus taught majors can be taken as Diplomas by studying fewer credits than the quota demanded for a degree. The exact title of the diploma and whether it is a UK or international award can be negotiated in individual cases to suit the student’s needs.

A Certificate is another name for a qualification which is shorter than a degree programme. Certificates are usually shorter than Diploma programmes, or may indicate a qualification prior to Diploma level. Certificates may be offered at all levels of education.

Certificates and Diplomas for Occasional Students
Occasional Students may earn a completion certificate for every unit studied and convert any six completion certificates to a special Diploma. These awards may, by arrangement, be issued by either Calamus Extension College Ltd. or Calamus International University, and will offer credit towards Calamus degree courses. Further details are given in the Occasional Study Guide which may be downloaded from www.unicalamus.org/downloads.htm or please request an email copy from info@unicalmus.org
For further details of the Occasional Study Scheme online please see www.unicalamus.org/units/call.htm

Advanced Diploma/Postgraduate Diploma available in most Master's and Bachelor's fields, comprising a degree syllabus of 30 or more credits without a project or thesis. Those with a Bachelor's degree or certain degree-equivalent qualifications may apply for Postgraduate Diploma; those without a degree for Advanced Diploma. Diploma candidates (but not degree candidates) may have a choice of a UK College Diploma or an International University Diploma. Diplomas may be upgraded to degrees later by project plus any necessary additional taught courses and the payment of an additional tuition fee.

Diplomas at different levels are also available by classroom study (usually part-time evening study) at affiliated institutes in various countries (currently Malaysia, Dubai, Bangladesh and Kenya). Please see our affiliates page and our classroom study page for the institutes involved. All locally-taught classroom diplomas are designed specifically according to local needs and regulations and are different from the distance courses available direct from Calamus Extension College in London.  Some local courses may be taught in languages other than English.

The Accelerated University Certificate in Life and Personal Coaching is for those who have professional qualifications in clinical psychology, psychotherapy, hypnotherapy, NLP, stress management or counselling OR who have a CIU B.A. or M.A. in counselling psychology, personal development, change agent studies, stress management, organisational spirituality, transpersonal or depth psychology, or an equivalent degree. The accelerated programme is taught in 5 modules covering two major coaching models and introducing a variety of coaching techniques. As well as these five modules, an extended integrative essay is required.  This CIU coaching programme is by distance learning only and is delivered by correspondence (there are no teleclasses). Academic credit and a tuition fee discount will be given to students who wish to proceed to a degree course later on.

Associate Degrees

The Associate Degree is a popular qualification in the US, where it normally comprises 50% of a Bachelor’s degree.  (In the UK, similar qualifications might be called a Diploma). CIU Associate Degrees are available in most majors in the same way as Diplomas.

Bachelor’s degrees

The following is a list of Bachelor’s degrees currently awarded by CIU by distance learning. Please note that some majors marked “provisional” may be temporarily not enrolling.  Also, it is possible for custom Bachelor’s degree syllabi to be negotiated, especially in collaboration with overseas institutions. Since this is a distance degree prospectus, Bachelor’s degrees awarded through classroom attendance at an overseas centre are not included here.

Met.D. (Doctor of Metaphysics) honoris causa

D. Tech. (Doctor of Technology) honoris causa

Other honorary doctoral awards may be considered in exceptional circumstances. All degrees listed as “honoris causa” (Latin for “honorary”) will have the words “honoris causa” inscribed on the degree certificate to distinguish them from earned degrees.

We cannot stress highly enough that Calamus International University honorary doctorates are privileged awards and are not automatic. Each application goes through a rigorous evaluation process. Comparatively few honorary degrees are awarded and many candidates are rejected.  Please do not confuse these honorary awards with inferior awards from other institutions that do not have any real restrictions on who receives an award.

APL and Challenge Examination

Calamus offers the “challenge examination” system for all taught course units in order to aid experienced and knowledgeable students to demonstrate their expertise. Any course unit may be “challenged” by an extended essay on an approved relevant topic. However, the challenged unit can only achieve a pass or “credit” grade and cannot be marked according to the Grade Point Average (GPA) system.

Degrees by Ongoing Assessment

Are you embarking on a non-degree programme of professional education which will last one or more years and which will comprise one or more distinct qualifying courses?  Would you like your studies to lead to a degree?  By registering for a suitable degree before completion of your professional course, all of your work including workshops, seminars and ancillary study can be counted towards a degree, and if your studies are sufficiently academic in scope, and the awarding body is accepted as an affiliate of CIU, no extra work may be necessary to graduate from CIU at the appropriate level. If you are interested in this option, please enquire with full details of your existing or proposed course of professional study. Therapy and complementary medicine training colleges, and training providers in other fields, are also welcome to apply for recognition of their courses so that each student will have the automatic right of credit transfer to an appropriate degree.

Registration for Joint or Combined Degrees (Submatriculation)

It is possible to register for joint degrees, e.g. B.A./M.A. or M.A./Ph.D., or even for B.A./M.A./Ph.D. Doing so will afford a significant saving in tuition fees. Joint or combined registration is ideal for professionals with significant credit transfer who have comparatively little work to do for the first degree. The first degree must be completed within 6 months by combination of credit transfer and any remaining required course units. In the event that more time is needed to complete the first degree, additional tuition fees may be charged.  Combined programmes might not be available for all combinations of subject and degree, and in the event of your stated combination not being available, an alternative programme will be suggested.
