Doctor of
Holistic Sciences
(D.H.Sc)
validated by Calamus International University
This leaflet should be read together with
the Calamus general prospectus (catalogue) and Course Unit List (see
our downloads page).
Calamus International University degrees are not UK or US degrees and do
not have government accreditation.
The distance programme leading
to the degree of Doctor of Holistic Sciences (D.H.Sc.) taught by
Calamus Extension College Ltd can be completed within 15 to 24
months, though people with ongoing credit or previous university or
equivalent credit could complete in less time.
This unique doctorate enables you to draw from
most holistic courses in the Calamus course unit repertoire, plus
independent study, to create a unique syllabus for each student.
For example, students may take courses from the
areas of:
spirituality,
holistic philosophy,
metaphysics,
parapsychology,
wellness,
energy medicine,
psychology,
counselling,
hypnotherapy,
NLP,
stress management,
consciousness studies
biology of belief
personal development,
and so on.
You may also be provided with a list of core
(non-optional) courses including a unit on holistic philosophy. 45
credits beyond Master’s level (or equivalent) will be required.
Since we do not adhere to a traditional academic year, it is
possible to enrol and start your course at any time.
To enter the degree course
you should be a qualified practitioner in one or more complementary
health disciplines, or have a health-relevant qualification such as
nursing, paramedic, medical social worker, etc, or have
qualifications in a spiritual, psychic or metaphysical field. You
will need a Bachelor’s degree (in any field) and also a Master’s
degree or a professional qualification in addition to your
Bachelor’s. If you do not have a Master’s (or equivalent) we can
suggest a suitable study plan involving extra credit. We will
be pleased to give you confidential advice on your eligibility based
upon your curriculum vitae / resume and achievements.
Credit for previous education
and experience is not normally allowed at doctoral level unless the
credit is for university courses completed or other university-level
training.
However, after you have enrolled, ongoing
credit can be gained for external courses taken, workshops attended,
teaching experience, clinical experience and giving or receiving
supervision.
The D.H.Sc. degree may be taken
for professional development or for personal interest if desired.
However, it is not in itself a qualification to practise any field
of complementary medicine, although the principles and theory of
various types of complementary medicine as well as holistic and
spiritual topics may be taught. The D.H.Sc. degree is not meant to
enable you to set up in private practice as a complementary medical
practitioner: for this you need the appropriate professional
training and certifications in the fields that interest you, plus
whatever licenses are necessary for the state or country where you
live. The D.H.Sc. degree is primarily for those who are
already qualified in their fields, who would like a doctoral
degree to add to their qualifications.
Our degrees are not in
themselves intended to satisfy the membership criteria of
professional organisations in the field of complementary medicine.
If you are seeking membership of a professional organisation, it
should normally be on the strength of the practitioner certificates
or diplomas you have obtained, with our degree(s) as supplementary
or professional development qualifications.
The actual course units you
will take are subject to individual negotiation according to your
interests and the subjects covered by your previous credit. Please
see the Course Unit List for course
units available in your field or related fields. More units are
being made available all the time.
You may, as part of the degree,
undertake a special project on an area of your choice, value 9
credits. However, especially if you are an experienced practitioner,
the opportunity exists for you to earn your Doctorate entirely by
taught work (including credits for ongoing practice, etc).
If you run a school of
complementary medicine, and would be interested in affiliating with
Calamus International University so that your courses would
automatically count as part of a degree, we would like to hear from
you. However, please note that if you offer short courses only, we
will not be able to consider you for affiliation. We are looking for
schools with established trainings that are accepted by a
professional body. Enquiries from any country will be welcome.
If you have done partial study
towards a doctorate elsewhere, and you have had to leave your
course, we will be happy to consider you as a transfer student. Even
if your previous studies were done years ago, we will accept them if
you have proof of study, subject to approval.
Please note that any details in
this leaflet may change at any time.
