A COURSE UNIT is the building block of a diploma or degree. It is the distance learning equivalent of a class. Most units are worth 3 credits - some longer ones are worth more.

Selected course units can be taken by occasional students - click here for further details.

The COURSE UNIT LISTINGS are arranged in categories. However for most programmes of study you can take units from more than one category.

More course units are being made available all the time, and new ones (subject to approval) can be created specially for students' needs. they will then be available to other students.

MANAGEMENT

Introduction

CIU offers business management courses within a holistic context. This means that, as well as core management studies, there is the opportunity for students to focus on self-development, communication and “soft skills”, and an understanding of how human-centred, caring, co-operative, ecological and spiritual concepts have the possibility of transforming the business of the future.

The degree programmes we offer are intended for people who have some responsible experience of work (either paid or voluntary) or who have taken additional further or adult education courses at post-secondary level. However, it is possible to transfer from the 2nd year of a full-time degree into our BBA programme to finish your degree.

Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) – accelerated route

A Bachelor’s degree by distance learning is available via an accelerated route for students with a high level of qualifications, skills and experience.  The first step will be to evaluate the applicant’s portfolio of prior credit.  Then the amount of credit required to complete the degree will be assessed, and on acceptance, a negotiable programme of study will be set to complete the Bachelor’s degree.  In most cases it will be possible to complete the Bachelor’s within 18 months, though confidential individual advice will be given on the applicant’s particular situation and estimated completion time.

However, we wish to point out that, in Europe and other regions, many top universities will admit mature and successful business men and women direct into an MBA course even though they might not have a Bachelor’s degree.  Calamus follows the example of these prestigious institutions. Therefore, if you have a successful career and/or other qualifications and no first degree, instead of a Bachelor’s we would like you to think about direct entry to the Calamus MBA.

If you want further advice on how much transfer credit you might have towards a Bachelor’s, or whether you are eligible for direct entry to an MBA, please send your CV or resume with a covering letter or e-mail.

Status of degrees

Please see our recognition page for full details of the status and recognition of Calamus degrees and please note they are not UK or US degrees and are not government-accredited.  A Calamus Bachelor’s degree might not be accepted by some universities for entry to a Master’s degree.  However, many people who do not have the opportunity of pursuing a full-time degree, or a degree at a well-known university, consider the Calamus option. Established business owners who missed out on earlier education increasingly find that a degree after their name is desirable, and Calamus provides an affordable and manageable route to a management qualification. People considering a self-employed venture will also improve their image by gaining a degree.

The MBA degree

CIU affords the opportunity for experienced and knowledgeable individuals to complete their MBA studies via an accelerated route, OR to do the full MBA programme. As well as a general MBA we offer a special course focusing on holistic and spiritual approaches within a business context, including work-based counselling, coaching and leadership skills.

A Bachelor’s degree is not necessary for entry and you can go direct from a higher diploma in business or similar qualification to an MBA.

If you wish to complete your MBA by an accelerated route, the first step will be to evaluate the applicant’s portfolio of prior credit. Then the amount of credit required to complete the degree will be assessed, and on acceptance, a programme of study will be negotiated to complete the MBA degree.  In most cases it will be possible to complete the Master’s within 12 months, though confidential individual advice will be given on the applicant’s particular situation and estimated completion time.

Please bear in mind that the type of prior credit that will be accepted for the MBA is more restricted than for the BBA.  At MBA level, credit will not be given for work experience alone, or any form of “life experience.”  Documented training achievements are required, such as certificates and diplomas and transcripts from recognised colleges or training providers.

No entrance tests are required for the Calamus MBA, although in doubtful cases we reserve the right to set a qualifying examination.

The MBA may be completed entirely through taught distance learning modules, or by taught courses plus a project. The standard format will be 45 credits, i.e. 15 x 3-credit units or equivalent. The credits may be taken from the list given at the end of this brochure (subject to availability).  A project, if chosen, is worth a maximum of 9 credits.  Exceptionally, for people with appropriate background, units from other Calamus subject areas may be taken.

If you want further advice on whether you are eligible for direct entry to an MBA, please send your CV or resume with a covering letter or e-mail.

The EMBA degree (Executive Master of Business Administration)

The EMBA (Executive Master of Business Administration) is a shortened form of the MBA degree without a major project or equivalent.  Direct entry to the EMBA is possible for experienced managers or business owners along the same lines as direct entry to the MBA.

The DBA (Doctor of Business Administration)

A DBA (Doctor of Business Administration) may be taken along similar lines to the MBA.  A Master’s degree (in any field) is necessary for entry to the DBA. If you do not have a Master’s, please ask us about a combined MBA/DBA programme.

Research degrees – M.Phil. and Ph.D.

CIU offers the research degrees of M.Phil. (Master of Philosophy) and Ph.D. (Doctor of Philosophy) in Business Management/Business Administration.   These degrees are by thesis/dissertation only – along British/European lines – and there are no taught courses.  Applicants for a research degree must already be graduates and have a working knowledge of research methodology appropriate to their field.

Research supervision is available in a number of specialist fields including manufacturing management, marketing, human resources management and tourism management. Since CIU has an international adjunct faculty, the supervisor may not be in the same country as the student, which is no problem as communication is normally by email.

We welcome applicants with “ABD” (all but dissertation) status. Students who have completed the taught components of an American (or similar) Ph.D. – even if several years have elapsed – may complete their Ph.D. with Calamus.

M.Phil. and Ph.D. students also have the opportunity to present a major unpublished work in lieu of a thesis, or to pursue independent study without detailed supervision. For further advice, please contact Morris Berg PhD at Calamus@tiscali.co.uk, preferably with a copy of your CV or resume and details of your research proposal.

Honorary degrees

Established and successful entrepreneurs and senior managers may quality for an honorary doctorate from CIU – this is not an “earned” or “academic” award and no academic work is required. All honorary doctorates will be inscribed with the legend “honoris causa” to distinguish them from earned degrees. It is possible to self-nominate for an honorary doctorate and prospective candidates should submit a full resume or curriculum vitae in the first instance without obligation. The candidate will receive free advice on suitability for an honorary doctorate or an alternative degree. Fees will be charged for processing an honorary award.  CIU grants very few honorary awards – the candidate’s suitability and experience will be very carefully assessed and inevitably some applicants will be rejected. We exercise due diligence in checking claims made by candidates concerning their qualifications and business backgrounds, in order to preserve the reputation of CIU awards.

Diploma in Organisational Behaviour

This distance learning Diploma is awarded by our affiliated school, Kadmon Academy.  It can provide credit towards a Calamus BA, MA or EMBA. For details see the new Kadmon website at www.kadmon-academy.org.uk, email kadcourses@tiscali.co.uk. Tel. 07005 801  528 (international +44 7005 801 528) or write to Kadmon Academy, Box BCM-3695, London WC1N 3XX, UK.

General information on Calamus distance degrees

All study is by distance learning.  Textbooks, to be bought by the student, are required for most units. BBA/MBA/DBA Degrees can be completed entirely by taught units or optionally a student may elect to do a project which will be worth 9 credits.

There are no compulsory entry tests. However, we reserve the right to set a qualifying examination if the candidate does not have sufficient prior academic qualifications and we are not sure of his or her suitability for academic study and level of written communication skills. Such a qualifying exam will normally comprise two essays.

Tuition fees

Basic tuition fees and other fees are listed on our website at www.unicalamus.org/tuition.htm and in our general prospectus (catalogue).  Our fees are calculated in British pounds (GBP) and any other currency amounts shown are subject to exchange rate fluctuation.

In some cases, e.g. for persons in developing countries, low- to medium-salaried employees or for owners of small businesses, it might be possible to negotiate a partial bursary (concessionary rate of fee) for management degrees, but a full curriculum vitae or resume is needed to consider any such possibility. CEOs and entrepreneurs are unlikely to qualify for bursaries.  Tuition fees paid by companies will not normally qualify for bursaries.

Monthly modular payment may be possible over 10 months by UK cheque, bank transfer or PayPal.   (Not available to all countries).

There are no full scholarships available. Management textbooks can be expensive especially if you need to get them by air mail, but we can recommend a UK bookstore who can ship books world-wide for a flat shipping rate of  6 pounds sterling per book.

Please only apply if you are likely to have the necessary funds for your studies and the cost of books.   Applications which suggest the non-availability of funds will be automatically rejected.

English language

The ability to read and write English fluently will be expected.  As a guide, if English is not your first language, we would look for high grades in English in your high school certificate, the Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English,  an IELTS score of  at least 6.0 or a TOEFL score of 550.  An English Language test result is not normally necessary before enrolment but may be requested in certain cases.

How to apply

Please complete the CIU application form and send with a copy of your CV or resume and copies of your most important previous qualifications.  The documents may be e-mailed to us at Calamus@tiscali.co.uk or sent by post.  Please do not send any money with your application.  If you are accepted we will advise you how to make payment.

BUSINESS MANAGEMENT COURSE UNITS

These are current at time of publication. However, units may be changed, amended or withdrawn at any time, and more units will be added from time to time.
An extended brochure containing descriptions of all the units below is in preparation.

IMPORTANT NOTE: the course unit number and the level of study are not directly related.  The student’s previous demonstrated knowledge largely determines the units that may be selected at any level of degree.  Thus, one student may do a particular unit at BBA level; another student may do the exact same unit, if suitable, at MBA level.  This flexibility avoids duplication of earlier studies and allows tailoring of the syllabus to the student within academic requirements.

Course unit descriptions are now being published on-line and many are now available. See our course unit index page for access to course unit descriptions.
