Calamus International University logo

Calamus International University closed down in September 2017.

Calamus International University was a private, campus-free distance learning university that was founded in 2001 in the British West Indies. CIU was first established in the Turks and Caicos Islands but since 2007 was registered in the Republic of Vanuatu. CIU offered Bachelor's, Master's and Doctoral degrees in various fields. CIU has alumni in many countries.

The original mission of Calamus International University was to provide affordable and flexible distance learning degrees for professionals such as counsellors, psychotherapists and complementary therapists and for students of holistic, metaphysical and spiritual fields, similar to programmes being offered by certain American distance universities, but with more flexibility and a wide choice of course content. Many hundreds of course units were available allowing maximum flexibility of the syllabus which was customised to the individual student's needs and background.

The scope of CIU education then expanded to offer programmes in a wider range of disciplines, especially for research leading to PhD, and studies became available in business administration and a range of other mainstream academic disciplines.

CIU provided a unique range of programmes and degree routes appealing to independent-minded students in all continents. It was affiliated with private education providers, learned societies and professional associations in the UK, Ireland, Kenya and several other countries.

CIU adjunct faculty teams were located in the UK, USA, Ireland, Kenya, Thailand and other countries.

CIU degrees are not government-accredited and are not UK, EU or US degrees. They were not intended to be equivalent to UK degrees.

CIU was fully accredited by the International Association for Distance Learning, Unit 36, 88-90 Hatton Garden, London EC1N 8PN, United Kingdom which is completely independent from CIU.

CIU's original registration in the Turks and Caicos Islands, in the British West Indies, commenced in 2001 through becoming licensed in that country as Calamus International University Ltd., Company Registration Number E. 30337, legal address P.O. Box 41, Providenciales, Turks and Caicos Islands, British West Indies.

In September 2007, Calamus International University relocated and became registered as an educational company in the Republic of Vanuatu, in the South Pacific, under the International Companies Act No. 32 of 1992, Republic of Vanuatu.  To honour the original foundation of CIU in the West Indies in 2001, the university company registered in Vanuatu was given the name of Calamus International University (British West Indies) Ltd, and its operational name was Calamus International University, under a provision made in the educational company's founding Memorandum.  The company was a non-profit limited by Guarantee and its registration number was 34088.  The Republic of Vanuatu is an autonomous independent country recognised internationally and a member of the United Nations. Before 1980, the Republic of Vanuatu was known as the New Hebrides and was administered jointly by the United Kingdom and France.

The last CIU degrees were awarded in September 2017.

The general administration of CIU courses and student records was organised via the University's official international representatives, Calamus Extension College Ltd., a UK company. However, Calamus Extension College Ltd. did not award degrees. Calamus Extension College Ltd. has ceased trading. Calamus Extension College was accredited by the International Association for Distance Learning.

The Calamus logo

The Calamus logo, seen above, is copyright. Permission was never given for it to appear on documents authored by students and others.  Nevertheless, various people have used it on their publications to give the appearance that they were official Calamus publications. Calamus was not a publisher and never published any work by students. Any work claiming to be a Calamus publication is the responsibility of its author and is not an official Calamus publication.

The Calamus logo has also appeared on various awards issued by certain bodies without the knowledge, permission of or validation by Calamus. Typically, such certificates will show the logos of several different colleges including Calamus, to make it appear as if the award is approved by all those colleges. Such certificates are most likely not genuine Calamus awards. If you have a query about whether a certificate is a genuine Calamus award, contact the email address below with the relevant details. Send a copy of the certificate if possible.
